Why I Hate Trophies & Achievements Whore's

http://thegamereviews.com/images/uploads/20080905_Trophy_01.jpg

I love Trophies & Achievements, I think they are a brilliant idea but I have a huge problem with them.

(1) I don’t care if someone buys a poor game because they think they may like it but when people start buying game’s because of Trophies or Achievements and not gameplay then there’s a problem. Most Trophy & Achievements whore’s buy the worst game’s on the market stuff like Iron Man and Lord of the Rings conquest because they want easy Trophies or Achievements.

(2) Some run from forum to forum shouting about how great they are at game’s, saying that they are so hardcore because they have more Trophies or Achievements than you. A small precent can say that, anyone the got 1000 Achievement in Ninja Gaiden my hat off to you that’s one tough game.  However the guys running about say he the best because he’s got ether Platinum or 1000 points in Alone in the Dark, Burnout or Prince of Persia well sorry but your just average gamer.
As these game’s require very little skill.  Just look at some of the top player’s in Resistance 2 some of them had only had 5 or 6 trophies but they were hardcore because they the best of us and took the time to master the game.

(3) Most Trophy or Achievements don’t appraise game’s they try to get as many Trophies or Achievements as fast as possible missing story arc’s or skipping cut-scene’s so they can get the Trophy of Achievements first and shout about how great they are because they did it first.

(4) Boosting first of all I have boosted for Trophies, never again as it ruin my online experience, but let’s take Gear’s of War, I don’t know how many time’s I had to listen to a cry baby shout down his mic for me not to do anything as he wanted to get the Can’t Touch Me Achievement ( win 10 rank game’s in a row).

Sorry for the rant but I’m sick and tried of these people saying they are better than us because they got more achievements point’s or trophies. Well I’ve got news for you, your not better than us.

    1) Burnout Paradise may not require skill but u still have to know the game to know the areas for the shortcuts. Because a short cut through the yellow gates can either put u in first in a race or put u in last because ur on the wrong road. it can also get u back on track quickly.

    2) i completly agree with you about everything else in this post trophy wh**es are really annoying and they get old quickly. IDK about on the 360 as i dont have one and dont read the posts but i assume that they are just as annoying

“when people start buying game’s beacause of Trophies or Ahievements and not gameplay then there’s a problem”

I love my trophies (in fact I JUST got my KZ2 platinum a few hours ago :D ), but when people buy a game for easy achievements/trophies, that’s just stupid, and tbh obsessed.

I am the kind of guy who when buys a game, will try to get as many trophies for it as I can, and if it’s a kind of game I am devoted to and will be playing for weeks to come, I try to get the platinum. I defintely do NOT rush the single player or anything like that to get these, thuogh.. For example I have the platinum for LBP, Burnout Paradise, and now KZ2. Each game I have played more many many hours.

Trophies/Achievements are great, i have loved the idea ever since the Ratchet & Clank series on PS2 has skill points, but I agree that some people are waaay too crazy about collecting ‘em all.

There’s a simple solution to all you woes mate. Internet is full of trolls, idiots and loosers; just don’t give a damn about them.

  4. Laland says:

Why on earth would you care why anyone else buys games? It’s the developers, who choose what the trophies/achievements are awarded for, that should be blamed. I played through “king kong” for the easy GS even though I hated every minute of it. If someone says “I’ve got more gamerscore/trophies than you LOL U SUCK” and they truly feel that way why shouldn’t they be allowed to express themself? The second they begin saying stuff like “i’m better than you” or something of that nature, then you may say “f*ck off” and ignore them. A friendly reminder, also, there are a couple of spelling error’s here and there in your rant. Don’t want to point out anything in particular, just had to mention it. :)

I hate trophy obsessed people i have a few of them at my school one who a fuck-wit and gets trophy for the PS3 even though he’s a xbox person its only a number sure i don’t mind trying at the game i own but to go out and rent a game that you don’t like just to put up the points any way people will actual check the card and knows if ur trophy whore and go what a fuck-wit plus it costs a money to rent and buy whore games.

  6. Used Cisco says:

Yeah, I used to like achievements, but then I started thinking about them too much and ruined the experience for me. Now I don’t bother with them. I’m a much happier gamer.

I had a dream last night that there was a trophy patch for “The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion” (I would absolutely go back and play that game again for trophies). And that I had an actual physical totem pole-like representation of my trophy collection. It was very cumbersome to manage and difficult to view various trophies.

I have found that my tendency to trophy-whore a game will shape the way I play for bad or for good. It also leads me to spend more time with a game than I normally would.

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion trophy patch be awesome I would go back to that game in a second it that ever happen

  10. bandoors_ksa ==> PSN says:

nobody told you that we trophy whore’s are better then you pal i have over 1600 trophies with 26 platinum BUT i unlock all the trophies because i love them no matter what the game is.

please don’t make it challenging it’s only a video game console add =)

  11. Grave_Harry says:

Well, I have 3 platinums (all on easy games) Uncharted, Little big Planet, and Burnout.
I usually just aim for 50% on every game (So I have about 8 games that are at 50%).
    I don’t brag about it or anything, I think Trophies/Achievements ruin games…

Not to be a dick, but your grammar is atrocious. If you’re going to publish something and you want your site to seem respectable, you should really do your best to clean up your writing before we have to suffer it.

These are some interesting claims that you make in your article, but you’re forgetting one thing: there are people out there who only want to play FOR the achievements. Maybe that’s what they enjoy. You might enjoy the story arc or playing only quality games, but there is a small segment of gamers out there that do thirst to get as many achievements as possible. That’s what they enjoy about gaming, so why would you want to begrudge them for that? Because they brag about it? Who cares? The Internet is full of people spewing shit and bragging about nothing. Me, I couldn’t care less about achievements. I think some are neat and actually require some thinking (sending the gnome into space in Half-Life 2: Episode Two was awesome), but if I can’t get an achievement during my time with the game, I don’t fret over it.

ha that first line is a perfect example of Leisure Suit larry Box Office Bust.
GOD the controlls in that game absolutly suck donkey balls, they are so hard to use and dont even work 90% of the time.
like when jumping up a wall and trying to grab a ledge he will jump over the ledge and push off air instead of climbing up.
alot of the game requires you to drop 1 lvl but theres no button for that you just have to carefuly run over the edge than quickly turn arround and hope for the best.
its like swiming in a shark tank with raw meat tied to your body, there should be laws against this its PATHETIC that people can release this crap and people spend 50 bucks on it and its ok.
shit that game isent even worth 10 bucks its by far the WORST game ive ever played and thats saying alot because ive been gaming for 15 years

  15. name says:

and how do they ruin games?
they add replayability (if thats a word)
they give you a reason to go back and play the game one and two they give you a reason to get the game.
i wouldent of bought burnout paradise midnight club LA xmen origins mirrors edge battle frount bad company quantum of solace and heaps more if it wasent for trophys.
and im glad i did because some of those games are the best ive played, like mirrors edge was so much fun same with burnout.
if it wasent for trophys i would of missed out on them.
and i think it helps you improve your skills to because normaly i play games on normal and thats it.
but with trophies they encourage me to play it on hard so i can get the trophy for it in doing so because its hard it improves my skills.
and its not like there taking time away from the devs from makeing the game, as naughty dog said it took them just a couple of hours to patch uncharted with trophys so if they can do it whats everyone elses excuse.
thats what i hate about alot of devs these days there lazy and only care about money, they dont care if gamers like there game, or if its of high quality.
they dont care if its rememberd for the next so many years as best FPS or whatever.
all they care about is $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.
thats the problem i would be embarased as hell if i made Leisure Suit larry Box Office Bust and if i could i would force the team to make it better.
if i couldent i would demand to have my name taken of the credits, no one could pay me to put my name on something thats such a piece of shit.
thats why i love naughty dog and insomniac everything that they release is perfect of highest quality they never release a bad boring buggy game they always release gold, thats why insomniac is my dream company to work for once i get my qualifications as a game dev.

  17. KrazyFace says:

Heh, heh. I think laland thought you were targetting him personally there Scruffy. Anyhow, I think trophies add a fair ammount of extra life to games with the whole “I’ll play (insert game name here) again to see if I can get that award” for some people. However, to invest money in a rubbish game just so you can mouth off I fear, takes a person with a severe inferiority complex. You’re right about the tough trophies too, WipEout for example has some serious hard to acheive trophies in there (I’m STILL working on my zico one) and there’s definite respect to those who get a platnum on that game, but just coz you got a whole bunch from the Golden Compass dosn’t mean you’re good at gaming. Nice wee read there though Scruffy, and ignore matt’s comment, there are far worce things published around the net than the article you wrote. Kudos to you!
